The hardest thing a man can do is the right thing... consistently. To wrangle his desires despite how he feels, to balance his impulses regardless where his current distraction is pulling him. To understand there will be no applause for it, very little gain in it and few who will stand beside him through it. Knowing he'll do it alone, over and over again, for a lifetime, all with the hope that somewhere along the way, doing the right thing might just be enough to help fix what’s broken in the world.
There will be days he grows tired, days he doesn't care, days he just wants to throw in the towel, let go and indulge in a single moment of doing the easy thing instead of the right thing - and he will. He'll fail, he'll fall and fail again. But each time he does, the weight of his compromise will eat away at him like a cancer on his soul, and he’ll either be consumed by it, or pick himself up, dust off his regret and return to doing right. Simply because he can longer endure the emptiness that follows in its absence.
His road will be difficult, his heart will ache and most days his only inspiration will come from within. Because no matter how many times he chooses to do right, the world will never let him forget the one time he did wrong, and for this reason he and the world we will forever be set apart. All his mistakes will be magnified, all his victories overlooked and the only reward he'll receive for doing the right thing; is just knowing deep down that he did the right thing.
This is the beautiful torment of doing what is right. Building oneself for the better against all odds, working day in and day out to suffice the yearning for perfecting what’s inside you. Knowing you're the only spectator to your efforts, the only one cheering your accomplishments and the only one who will ever truly know how far you’ve come. You do it, endlessly, relentlessness, not because it makes sense, not because it's easy, but just because it's right. And somewhere along that road, however long it maybe be, you will eventually discover a peace and oneness like no other. A oneness with self, a peace with your past, and both with Him who created you.
